If I'm going through the trouble of dropping the transmission, or if I keep this ride long-term, I think it will be worth it to me to swap it to a 5-speed. But the ride and brakes in the wagon feel like a luxury car now. I've been spoiled by a 3 cyl 50 MPG Geo Metro prior to this. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I feel this wagon would be peppier with a 5-speed. It's not as much the transmission reliability that has me down, but mainly, the fact that I almost strictly buy standard shift vehicles, which I prefer to drive. He said it was on there for years, and the rim sure was rusted on. As opposed to most of my prior vehicles, out of alignment, bald on one side. I still remember the potholes/patches all over town!Ĭlick to expand. Thanks! The tire was bald on both sides, which confused me. (I would do it with any GM auto trans as well.) And with an Escort, I would always get a rebuilt torque converter. I strongly advise putting in the shift it (made by transgo), which makes if shift silky smooth. I just cover things with a tarp at night. I do my work outside, under a shade tree beside the driveway, on a home made workbench. Having the spring compressors and a good pair of circlip pliers made the 2nd one easier. The first one I did with no special tools. Complete instructions are in the Ford Escort Shop Manual. Over the last 12 years, I went out of my way to buy Escorts with bad auto transmissions, after I did the first one and found out its not that hard. One each escort trans I have done, I have had to repair cross threaded holes or stripped threads! Some members jack up the engine a couple of inches to do this, by unbolting one or two of the motor mounts like the one under the battery and the one in front of the bell housing by the radiator. I always drop the front-to-rear crossmember, so I have better accesss to the small bolts holding the oil pan in. I would do a fluid and filter change meanwhile: But. The most difficult part is having to take if out of the car and put one back in. They arent too difficult, just a little tedious. I have rebuilt about five of the F4EAT automatic transmissions. Of course an alignment shop can do it too. It could also be due to the toe-in being too high (if the wear was worse on the outer side of the tread), or having negative toe-in, (if the tread wear was on the inner side of the tread). If a front tire was bald, it could be from being underinflated. Struts are not very hard to replace on an Escort. They can be replaced by taking the old strut out and getting the springs compressed, etc. The strut tops can eventually rip apart, but I think it rare, and after high mileage. The new 'quick struts' should come with new tops, which are the rubber isolator things you see at the top of the strut tower under the hood. I’ll have a few questions to post later, like my dome light/radio power issues. Otherwise, she needs a good cleaning and an oil change. Advance Auto seems to sell the quick strut assembly for $99 per side and I intend to do both. The drivers side mount doesn’t look much better. The strut tower literally sinks an inch when the car is jacked up. ![]() The only other major issue that I see is the broken front passenger strut mount, as pictured. Temperature is holding steady, I think the coolant was just a bit low (the guy mentioned the gauge would show too warm). I just swapped a new to me tire on, filled the radiator, and drove her home. The front passenger tire was bald with metal showing and trashed. I had to get something in a hurry since the frame broke on my Geo Metro, and this little wagon seemed to do the trick! I’ve owned dozens of 20 or so year old 90’s beaters. which is something I’ve never seen on a car of this age and price. The only sad part is that it has an automatic transmission. Someone must have kept this tucked away for a while with only 97k original miles. The car is surprisingly clean and rust free for one that lived in the rust belt its whole life. Not sure if it would pass Pa inspection, but I took it back to Eastern Ohio (no inspections or emissions testing) with me. I got a steal the other day I picked up a dark green 1995 Escort LX wagon for $400 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
